Blessed with a beautiful voice and a stupendous range, Fitzgerald could outswing anyone, was a bright scat singer, and had near-fashionable elocution; one could always understand the bruit she sang. The one fault was that, perception that she always sounded so favorable to exist singing, Fitzgerald did not at all times punch below the surface of the lyrics she interpreted...
